Performing Arts

The year 2013 in Poland was marked by a series of unrest-inspiring events that curtailed the liberty of artists and frequently verged on censorship. It may seem we are witnessing culture wars between the so-called right-wing, conservative, catholic representatives and so-called left-wing, more liberal, progressive part of the society. In fact, what creates a real division in contemporary Poland is not a series of ideological issues but the direct consensus-defying consequences of the post-1989 transition and the yawning gap between the haves and the have-nots in Poland. Ideological squabble seems thus to be a smoke screen, a type of pressure valve in the times of accelerating socio-economic inequality.

Książka Bojany Kunst nie poprawia nastroju. Pokazuje pułapki, w jakie współczesną sztukę polityczną wikłają skomplikowane związki z kapitalizmem. Ich relacje i zależności zdecydowanie wykraczają poza zjawisko komercjalizacji czy nawet cenzury ekonomicznej. Sięgają daleko głębiej – dotyczą najbardziej podstawowych sposobów pracy. Od kilkudziesięciu lat w mechanizmach wytwarzania oraz w praktykach instytucjonalnych w obszarze sztuki zachodzą bowiem zmiany, które są ściśle powiązane z przekształceniami procesów i warunków produkcji w późnym kapitalizmie. Uwikłania te powodują, że nawet najlepiej wymyślony projekt teatru politycznego może utracić swój krytyczny i emancypacyjny potencjał. Artysta w pracy to książka, która odsłania skalę i zasięg tego zjawiska, wskazując na jego dewastujące dla sfery publicznej i życia artystów konsekwencje.

Twórcy współczesnego tańca, skupieni w nurcie tzw. krytycznym czy konceptualnym (przy czym to ostatnie określenie, dość powszechne w potocznym obiegu, nie jest szczególnie trafne, budzi zresztą uzasadniony sprzeciw wśród samych artystów) zrywają z zasadą bezwzględnego podporządkowania tańca ruchowi. Uwolnienie praktyki tanecznej od przymusu ciągłego, sprawnego i ocenianego według określonych kryteriów ruchu zaowocowało rozwojem tej dziedziny w jeden z najciekawszych i najszybciej rozwijających się obszarów sztuki. Taniec może być polityczny, krytyczny, wywrotowy. To właśnie na gruncie projektów choreograficznych performowana jest współczesna instytucja sztuki.

In the third issue of Polish Theatre Journal, we examine institutional practices in Polish theatre in the context of political and social changes. We analyse conditions for freedom of artistic expression and of mechanisms of censorship; we observe significant conflicts and struggles in theatre life, and scrutinize the entanglement of economic, political and aesthetic determinants. We query the possibility of making theatre institutions into social laboratories in which cultural practices for the new democratic order can be developed.

We query the possibility of making theatre institutions into social laboratories in which cultural practices for the new democratic order can be developed.

I believe that a genuine and effective campaign for art as a democratic instrument can only succeed if the methods and conditions of producing art are rendered more democratic; and the programme of social emancipation ought to begin with a critical examination of the mechanisms, structures and internal relations in force within the organization we are responsible for. I am in no doubt that public arts institutions remain a priceless good, requiring care and attention, but in my view the campaign for their survival will only be efficient insofar as we reflect critically on how these institutions are organized, how they operate, and whom and what they realistically benefit. In this context, I understand institutional critique as a critical enquiry into the practices, structures and methods of working in art. I find it equally important to expose the institutional framework and the process by which it is delimited – in doing so, I am especially mindful of the fact that defining borders inevitably leaves out fragments of territory. I will attempt to answer the question about the practicability of institutional critique in the current socio-political and economic context, and address the issue of why this type of critique is more vital today than ever.

W moim przekonaniu realna i skuteczna walka o sztukę jako narzędzie demokratyczne nie jest możliwa bez demokratyzacji metod i warunków jej wytwarzania, a program zakładający społeczną emancypację powinien zaczynać się od krytycznego spojrzenia na mechanizmy, struktury i wewnętrzne relacje obowiązujące w ramach organizacji, za którą jesteśmy odpowiedzialni. Nie mam wątpliwości, że publiczne instytucje sztuki pozostają dobrem bezcennym, wymagającym uważnej troski i opieki, jednak w moim rozumieniu skuteczna walka o ich przetrwanie nie jest możliwa bez krytycznego namysłu nad tym, jak są zorganizowanie, jak funkcjonują i komu oraz czemu realnie służą. W tym kontekście rozumiem krytykę instytucjonalną jako krytyczne badanie praktyk, struktur i metod pracy w sztuce. Równie ważne wydaje mi się ujawnianie ram instytucjonalnych oraz procesu ich wyznaczania, przy zwróceniu szczególnej uwagi na fakt, że wyrysowywanie granic zawsze oznacza pozostawienie jakiegoś obszaru na zewnątrz.
Spróbuję odpowiedzieć na pytanie, w jaki sposób w obecnym społeczno-politycznym i ekonomicznym kontekście możliwa jest krytyka instytucjonalna i dlaczego jest właśnie dzisiaj niezbędna.

Taking as my starting point the assumption that art is a social practice, and how it is made and perceived is always determined by the socio-political and economic context, I would like to propose that a festival be regarded as an art institution – and consider the implications of that perspective. The political ontology of the festival; the political and economic entanglements of curatorial practices; economic (self-)censorship and its recent manifestations at theatre festivals in Poland will be the main facets of my study. I will also enquire about how the festival today can be ‘taken over’, regained a space for critical activity. My consideration of the institutional practices of present-day festivals will be based on my own experiences as a curator; they will also be situated in the context of practicable institutional-critical activity as proposed by Gerald Raunig, and take as their point of reference the concept of an institution as a common good. The concept of the ‘performativeness of the art world’ formulated by Ana Vujanovic will be of primary importance to my study.

Wychodząc z założenia, że sztuka jest praktyką społeczną, a sposób jej wytwa- rzania i percepcji uwarunkowany jest zawsze przez kontekst społeczno-polityczny i ekonomiczny, chciałabym zaproponować spojrzenie na festiwal jako na instytucję sztuki – i zastanowić się nad wynikającymi z tej perspektywy konse- kwencjami. Szczególnie uważnie będę chciała przyjrzeć się politycznej ontolo- gii festiwalu, politycznym i ekonomicznym uwikłaniom praktyk kuratorskich, problemowi (auto)cenzury ekonomicznej i przypadkom jej występowania
w ostatnim czasie w ramach polskich festiwali teatralnych oraz zadać pytanie, w jaki sposób możliwe jest dzisiaj „przechwycenie” festiwalu i odzyskanie go jako przestrzeni działań krytycznych. Rozważania o praktykach instytucjonalnych współczesnych festiwali oprę na własnych doświadczeniach kuratorskich oraz usytuuję w kontekście możliwych działań krytyczno-instytucjonalnych proponowanych przez Geralda Rauniga oraz w odniesieniu do pojęcia instytucji jako dobra wspólnego. Szczególnie ważna będzie tu dla mnie sformułowana przez Anę Vujanović koncepcja performatywności świata sztuki.

While thinking about notions of the ‘local’, the ‘regional’ and
the ‘authentic’ in a social and economic context, one sees these terms becoming increasingly blurred. What remains when the ‘local’ turns out to be a mere product? How does this constant shift between locations, contexts and cultures influence artists’ work? How do these artists elaborate their ways of communicating
their practice, while challenging the status of mobility, instability, being-in-motion? Where are the centre and peripheries and how
do they influence working conditions? Is the East still running after the West? And what does ‘the East’ mean, after all?
These were the main questions we asked while creating IDENTITY.MOVE! - a temporary space for sharing knowledge, experience and intuitions for performing artists working in so-called ‘East Europe’ - a Europe which, for many, remains on the peripheries. The geopolitical situation definitely influences artistic practice, not necessarily always thematically, but mainly through accessible working conditions and artists’ position in society.
